By LANNA’s Student Support Team
Are you looking for a supportive and nurturing environment to help your child excel in English? Look no further than LANNA’s Accelerated English Programme (AEP). Our programme is designed to provide students with the essential language skills needed to thrive in a British curriculum school.
What sets LANNA’s AEP apart?
-
- Gateway to a Quality British Education: AEP is the chance to enter LANNA’s widely successful IGCSE and A level programmes. We have a proven track record of 100% success rate in students entering Universities of choice as well as over 60% of students successfully gaining offers in Top 100 universities around the world.
-
- Comprehensive Skill Development: Our AEP focuses on developing all aspects of English language learning, including reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Students also have opportunities to enhance their international mindedness and cultural awareness.
-
- Proven Success: Over the years, our AEP students have achieved remarkable results. Many have gone on to participate in prestigious events like LANNA MUN and CMMUN, while others have excelled in extracurricular activities such as sports and the arts.
How We Measure Success
At LANNA, we believe in a holistic approach to assessment. We utilise a variety of methods to track student progress, including:
-
- UK Standardised Tests: reading comprehension tests
-
- Regular Assessments: Weekly spelling and vocabulary tests, extended writing tasks, and graded projects/presentations in English, Maths, ICT & Drama
-
- Observation and Feedback: Ongoing monitoring of student performance in the classroom
It’s important to note that reading and writing assessments are conducted every semester, and graded against mainstream UK standards. Students are considered successful if their scores are at the expected level for their age by the end of the programme.
Our research shows that, on average, students placed in the AEP programme at LANNA achieve reading comprehension scores at the UK expected level for their age after 1-2 years.
This positive trend is visually represented in the accompanying graph.
A Supportive and Collaborative Learning Environment
We strive to create a positive and inclusive learning environment where all students feel valued and supported. We spend quality time at the beginning of the school year getting to know one another through different activities. Throughout the year, students engage in a variety of activities that involve working with partners or within teams. Teams are created so that they include a mix of abilities in order to provide mentoring opportunities for the more skilled students and support for those students that are challenged. All students have a weekly one-to-one for feedback on reading & writing with clear target areas for improvement.
Our teachers employ a variety of strategies to foster collaboration and engagement, including:
-
- Teamwork and Peer Support: Students work together in small groups to develop their language skills and support one another.
-
- Differentiated Instruction: Our teachers tailor their instruction to meet the individual needs of each student.
-
- Personalised Feedback: Students receive regular feedback from their teachers to help them identify areas for improvement.
The curriculum in both Primary and Secondary AEP classes are scaffolded and differentiated, aligning with the mainstream curriculum while providing additional support and challenges:
Primary Programme Approach
The AEP Programme at the Primary level fosters a collaborative learning environment where AEP teachers work closely with mainstream teachers to ensure that AEP classes are tailored to individual student needs. Key subjects like Math and IPC are covered, with topics differentiated to cater to varying abilities. To enhance language skills, AEP students utilise English Picture Story Books (POR), which are carefully selected and explored over extended periods.
Secondary Programme Approach
In LANNA’s Secondary AEP, collaboration between AEP teachers and the English department continues to ensure that AEP classes are aligned with the mainstream curriculum while providing a more in-depth learning experience. To reinforce mathematical concepts, AEP students are taught by mainstream Maths teachers. In addition, secondary students engage in a variety of classes including Art, Physical Education (PE), Personal, Social, Health, and Economic education (PSHE), and ICT. This well-rounded approach aims to develop students’ language skills, critical thinking abilities, and overall well-being.
Programme Structure and Enrichment
Our AEP offers two levels for Primary students (Years 3/4 and Years 5/6) and one level for Secondary students (Years 7-9).
Students can spend a maximum of two years in the Primary AEP and one year in the Secondary AEP. After completing their first year in the Primary AEP, students would either progress to the next AEP level, or join mainstream (providing they have reached the required level standards in reading and writing).
Following their first year in the Secondary AEP, students will transition to mainstream classes, provided they have met the necessary reading and writing standards. Our success rate in Secondary is outstanding with all students able to enter the mainstream classes.
In addition to our core curriculum, we offer a variety of extracurricular activities to enrich the learning experience, such as:
-
- Model United Nations: Students participate in MUN conferences to develop their public speaking, debating, and research skills.
-
- Extracurricular Activities: AEP students can participate in a wide range of extracurricular activities, including sports, clubs, and arts programs.
