Sports are an important part of life at LANNA, and provide opportunities for the release of energy, the development of fitness, and improved coordination in our students. In addition team sports encourage the formation of lasting bonds of friendship among players, and a sense of community and connection with coaches, parents and other schools.

We offer a variety of sports, all with a focus on the traditional British values of fair play, sportsmanship and teamwork. Every student has an equal opportunity to participate, regardless of ability.

Football & Futsal

Football & Futsal are very popular at LANNA, and you will see games going on any time the students are outside. As a British school, Football is very much a part of our culture, and we tend to be very competitive against other Chiang Mai international schools as part of CMAC (the Chiang Mai Athletic Conference).

All students have the opportunity to compete in football during their CMAC seasons, and we enter teams at many different levels: U8, U10, U12, U14, Junior Varsity (U16) and Varsity (U20). This includes both boys and girls teams for U12 ages and above, and mixed boys and girls teams in the U8/U10 age groups. During the football season we schedule matches or team practices on Tuesday or Thursdays after school. Futsal is available for the U12 age group during Season 3, and secondary school students also have the opportunity to take part in a CMAC Futsal Tournament towards the end of each academic year.

Volleyball

Volleyball matches against other international schools at secondary school level take place during Season 3 (April-May). Students train every Tuesday and Thursday throughout the season, and it is also taught as part of our PE curriculum from KS3-KS5. The CMAC competition caters for both boys and girls at U14, Junior Varsity and Varsity level.

Basketball

Basketball is a sport in which we are constantly improving, and performing well against the many American schools in Chiang Mai that prioritise this activity. We currently offer Basketball throughout the school in the U10, U12, U14, Junior Varsity and Varsity age groups, and it is becoming increasingly popular with all our students. training is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays during Season 1 for the U11 and U14 age groups, and during Season 2 for the Junior Varsity and Varsity teams.

Swimming

Swimming during the warmer months is popular with students of all ages and is an important part of our PE curriculum and extra-curricular sports programme. We aim to develop confidence and safety in the water for all our students, and as part of the curriculum students cover a variety of activities including stroke development, life-saving and water polo. We also compete in an annual junior and senior CMAC competition and are the current CMAC Junior Swim Champions, as well as having many individual age group champions across the school.

Badminton

Badminton is another of our popular sports, and is also taught as part of the PE curriculum. Every year we compete in the CMAC tournament held in May, and we have developed a reputation as a strong badminton school, with several very strong individual athletes competing. This activity is open to boys and girls in the U12, U14, Junior Varsity and Varsity age groups.

Track and Field

The Junior CMAC Track & Field Championships are held every year. We have had many individual champions over the years and several students in the school hold current CMAC records.

Cricket

Cricket has now been introduced at Primary level with coaching from members of Chiang Mai’s Lanna Cricket Club. The school sponsors Lanna Cricket Club based at Gymkhana Club, the venue for our annual Parents v Teachers match. The Primary team has started annual fixtures with other cricket playing schools, the highlight being the “Sawasdee Cup” at Prem school.

Other sports and activities

Other sports and activities that are offered during curriculum time include: table tennis, rounders and softball, yoga, netball, tag rugby and fitness training.

Our fitness gym is regularly used by students and staff to build their fitness, and is a particularly important resource for students studying Physical Education at IGCSE and A-Level, to develop their understanding of the different components of fitness, and learn how to apply the principles of training to their workouts, in order to improve their performance.
