Overview
At LANNA, we are committed to equipping our students with the tools they need to succeed academically. As part of this commitment, we have introduced the Progress Test in English (PTE) for Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9). This standardised, computer-based test measures core English skills such as spelling, grammar, punctuation, and reading comprehension. Here’s everything you need to know about the PTE and its significance for your child’s learning journey.
What is the PTE?
The Progress Test in English is a no-preparation-required assessment designed to track student progress in literacy. It provides valuable insights into a student’s English skills and reading comprehension while benchmarking their performance against the UK national average.
Why is the PTE Important?
The test serves multiple purposes:
- Identifying Learning Gaps: The results help pinpoint areas where students may need additional support.
- Informing Teaching Strategies: Teachers use the data to tailor instruction, ensuring that literacy is integrated effectively across all subjects.
- Tracking Progress: The PTE highlights patterns and trends over time, giving us another tool to ensure students are on track for IGCSE success.
- Celebrating Achievements: The results reflect the strength of our Key Stage 3 programme, consistently showing above-average performance compared to UK standards.
A Balanced Perspective
While the PTE provides valuable data, it’s just one piece of the puzzle:
- It’s a snapshot in time and should be considered alongside other forms of assessment such as classwork, exams, and teacher observations.
- The scores will not impact semester grades or appear on official reports.
- Instead, reports will be uploaded to our Gibbon platform, where parents can access them soon.
2024/25 PTE Highlights
This year marked our first use of the PTE, and the results are impressive:
- Year 7: 52% of students scored above average or very high.
- Year 8: While 30% scored above average or very high, areas for growth were identified, which will guide future teaching.
- Year 9: An incredible 53% of students scored above average or very high, showcasing readiness for IGCSE.
Across all year groups, LANNA students consistently outperformed the UK national average.
How the Results Are Used
- For Teachers: The data supports differentiation, helping identify students who need additional challenges or support.
- For Parents: Simplified reports provide clear insights into your child’s strengths and areas for improvement. Reports are submitted annually through Gibbon.
